The new year is in full swing! And a new year always brings new trends along with it... The past 12 months has seen fitness apps, avocados and HIIT classes take over our lives as well as our Instagram feeds, but what can we expect this year?

As the radically-changing wellbeing industry continues to grow, we’re taking a look into the trends that are expected to dominate 2020 and find out whether they are just a temporary fad or if they are here to stay for the future.

Plant-based Living

Plant-based diets are nothing new but the meat-free movement is showing no signs of stopping. In 2020 plant-based innovation is expected to boom whilst brands continue to deliver more meat alternative products with improved ingredients and nutrition. Several retailers including ASDA, Co-op & M&S have already jumped on the band wagon launching their first plant-based ranges as the demand surges.

Recent documentaries including Netflix’s The Game Changers, Carnage and Cowspiracy: The Sustainability Secret have all been credited for shining a light on the benefits of going plant based and according to The Vegan Society, “only 40 percent of the global population will be consuming meat by 2040.” With this in mind, we believe plant-based is more than a passing trend and is here to stay.

Virtual Fitness

Gone are the days of crowded fitness classes and long drives to the gym. The virtual concept of live streaming services and on-demand work-outs became extremely popular last year but with new technology companies expanding their offerings in 2020 this could just be the start of the virtual wellbeing craze.

The billion-pound brand Peloton is just one of the tech leaders shaking up the industry with their home cycling experience. Fitness enthusiasts can tune into live spinning classes accompanied by encouraging instructors as they fully immerse in the virtual world of fitness.

The peloton phenomenon may be reshaping our workouts at home but is it the way to go? Call us traditional but we’re all for the live experience.

Mindfulness Meditation

You’re not alone if you’ve been feeling a little burnt-out recently. We live in a busy world where our mental health can sometimes take a back seat - it’s no wonder that we’re the most stressed generation ever. All of this pressure is encouraging us to search for new ways to clear our thoughts in 2020.

Mindfulness is a type of meditation that allows us to be fully aware of everything that’s what’s happening around us and accepting it. According to the NHS “paying more attention to the present moment – to your own thoughts and feelings, and to the world around you – can improve your mental wellbeing.”

If undertaken correctly, it can improve everyday life by reducing stress, negative thoughts and increasing energy. Meditators have backed the benefits of regular mindful practice for years and we’re predicting more growth to come.

‘Wellness holidays’ have been around for a long time but with more people becoming aware of the need for maintaining their health both physically and mentally, the rise in solo travelling and personalised retreats has recently grown.

Personalised retreats are promised to be completely tailored to your wellness needs, whether you’re into fitness training programmes or nutritional education, but are they just an expensive hype or are they really worth the cost?

Professor Helen Stokes-Lampard, chair of the Royal College of GPs believes the essence of what keeps us healthy remains the same.

“They might be well-intentioned, but they are often not supported by robust clinical evidence. That’s why it’s essential that as a society we all work together to encourage each other to lead healthier lifestyles, not just for a few months of the year, but permanently.”

It’s no secret that pollution and climate change are both major issues impacting our planet but as we enter a new decade, we are realising the benefits and necessity of adapting to a sustainable lifestyle.

From swapping to more renewable energy sources to eating smarter and recycling more waste, our eyes have opened to the changes needed for a sustainable future and we believe 2020 will be the year of climate action.
