Six Tips to Surviving Dehydrated Skin in Winter

Being prepared for the colder seasons not only means prioritising your immunity, but also getting on top of your skin hydration! That’s right – your skin responds to the change in seasons and has the tendency to become drier, flakier, and more dehydrated in winter.

This can be caused by the body’s decrease in thirst response during the cooler weather and as such, we find ourselves drinking less water. The low humidity levels and harsh winter wind can also zap your skin of its natural moisture. Pair both with the dry & stagnant air created from central heating and your skin health can really suffer!

Luckily there’s six easy steps you can take to keep your skin looking healthy when the temperature dips.

1. Dial down the temperature

A hot shower or bath at the end of a cold day can feel especially soothing. But, to keep your skin nourished, you may want to keep the water temperature closer to lukewarm. Be sure to also take care when you dry your skin after bathing. Gently pat your skin with a soft towel, which may allow some of the moisture to hydrate the top layer of your skin.

2. Use a humidifier

Now that the indoor heater is turned on, keep in mind that it can dry out the air and dry out your skin. It might be worth investing in a quality humidifier and use it at night whilst sleeping. By keeping moisture in the air, it can help your skin stay hydrated and supple.

3. Moisturise right after washing

Apply your moisturiser as soon as you can after drying off post-cleansing or bathing to help lock in moisture. Pat your skin dry and apply moisturiser when still a little damp to reap the full benefits.

4. Get your beauty sleep

Don’t forget about that restorative shut eye! During sleep, every cell in our body renews and repairs which can keep your skin in good condition.

5. Eat more antioxidants

Try eating foods that are high in antioxidants and omega-3 fatty acids. Both types of nutrients can protect your cells from environmental damage and help your body make healthy skin cells.

6. Hydrate from the inside

In addition to a healthy diet, keeping well hydrated is key! Set yourself daily water goals and aim to drink at least six to eight glasses of water throughout the day and keep alcohol and caffeine consumption to a minimum.

Remember, just because you’re not thirsty doesn’t mean that your body is hydrated!
